Around the house, lately.

I'm yet to do proper decor posts, now that most of the renovations around the home are done. We redid the flooring in the bedrooms, did a complete kitchen overhaul and built a walk-in closet (which is my favourite place in the house, of course). I'm constantly redecorating, and it's a work in progress (which it will forever be, I'm sure) - here're a few pictures of some of my favourite things around the home.

Dots + Check

I went outside of my comfort zone and mixed prints of more than two colours. I figured, white is still a common colour in the mix - and so it's still pretty safe. Besides, a print in black and white should be a neutral by now - it's such a classic, and an easy-to-mix print.

I love a good two-piece, and this one is particularly great because it mixes sporty and lady-like. I think the best outfits are the unpredictable ones, so what's better than a baseball jacket paired with a midi skirt?! The overall paint splatter print ties it together, and keeps it fresh. It's art. I love wearing art.

Super Tall

Mr Price Pants, Top, Neckpiece & Cuffs; Topshop Shoes
Zara Bag; China Town Sunglasses; Lovisa Earrings
I'm not very tall, but in high waist, wide leg pants & these topshop skyscrapers, I'm on top of the world! A great way to look taller is high waist anything, because it elongates your body and a wide leg gives the illusion that your legs are a mile long too. If you're not wearing a wide leg, or high waist - try a nude or pointy shoe if you want to look taller. I love a good trick or two!
Speaking of tricks, I picked up these Prada-esque sunglasses from China Town long ago (while I swoon over the originals). It's so fun, yet classy - and real thing will be perfect for my birthday coming up in December. Ha! Husband has heard that a dozen times.

Happy weekend!

Empire Maxi

Old Street Dress; Melissa Shoes; Zara Bag; Forever New Sunglasses
Foschini Hat; Woolworths Bangle

I got this dress from Old Street Retro a couple of years ago and it's a great piece - it has seen me through my pregnancy (see proof, here!). That's the beauty of an empire line dress - it suits every body shape. It flatters apples (wide waistline) and pears (wide hip & thigh area) especially because it skims over the stomach, hips and thighs. It also elongates the body - and that is slimming in itself.

Here are a two of my favourite budget-friendly empire maxi's from Mr Price: blue and print. If you don't mind splurging, Kapsule have beautiful ones, here and here. And finally, Spree have a range of maxis to suit every shape - and quite a few empire ones. Here are my faves from them: black & white, magenta, colourblock and embellished.

Now, I'm all for women wearing what they want as opposed to "what suits you" because I believe you determine what suits you, because personal style is about wearing what you like, confidently. That said, I suggest an empire maxi for these body types if you want to mask these areas - if not, rock that bodycon dress!

The Functional Wardrobe

Custom Skirt & Scarf; Mr Price Top; Woolworths Bag & Shoes
Forever Mine Jewellery
That nothing to wear feeling hit me at the wrong time recently - as I was deciding what to wear to SA Fashion Week! I went with a tried and tested formula and wore practically the exact look I showed you, here. I've learnt that you can't go wrong with a bold print - you'll feel instantly "fashionable".

What my struggle to find an outfit taught me, once again, is that a good wardrobe is not necessarily one with lots of clothes. I have lots of clothes, but I am not yet at my desired perfectly functional wardrobe. I think a good one is actually built on less pieces - filled with easy to mix classics that will serve you well, over and over again.

Xogo Dress; Fashion Express Shoes
Zuri Clutch, Neckpiece & Earrings; YDE Sunglasses
I had a few thoughts last night, how life happens and how hurt and destruction happens... I remember thinking that we may never know why these things happen but one thing remains true - God is still God. He is King of kings, and ruler of nations - and we can seek Him in times of hurt. I woke up to some bad news this morning, and I was reminded of last night's thoughts. We may never know why things happen, but there is comfort in Christ.
"My grace is enough; it’s all you need.
My strength comes into its own in your weakness."
2 Corinthians 12: 9
Maybe you needed to hear this today.

Dress for Slimmer Thighs

Mr Price Dress & Boots; Woolworths Bag, Jacket & Scarf; Neckpiece c/o Skip
Knowing your body shape - and identifying what you love (and don't love so much) can help you develop great body confidence. The trick is to know what you've got, and what you want to highlight, or downplay. That's the beauty of illusion dressing.
It's all about proportion. Are you widest at the shoulders? The hips? Thighs? Or does your wide waist steal the show?
I'm the typical South African woman - and my thighs are widest. A-line cuts, and fit and flare dresses like this one work well to slim down my thighs. It also helps to add bulk on top (like this turban, jacket and neck piece), for balance.
Now, I mostly wear what I like, irrespective of my shape, but knowing my formula is great. We all have body parts we don't like so much, and knowing how to use clothing is a great tool to boost your confidence - and that matters.
